This is a greeting that was dear to our founder St Francis of Assisi.
Drawing inspiration from him we extend this greeting to everyone who visits our website.
We are the Franciscan Friars of Our Lady Queen of Peace province, a branch of the worldwide
Roman Catholic fraternity of the Order of Friars Minor that was founded by St Francis of
Assisi. As Friars, we serve the Catholic Church as brothers and priests,
devoting our lives to search for God in a communal life of poverty,
prayer and service to the people of God.
The Franciscan Order was orally
approved by the church in 1209 and later received a bull of approval in 1223.
The first Franciscan s arrived in South Africa in the 1930s. Throughout our history as
Franciscans and as a province we have always endeavoured to listen to the
signs of the times ad to respond with generosity to the call to reach out to those in
need. Today we continue Francis’ mission to keep the Gospel message alive in our
contemporary world.
Our Lady Queen of Peace is an evangelical and missionary fraternity called minister in Southern Africa. The Friars, animated by the spirit of Franciscan joy and open to constant renewal, endeavour to spend all their energy in advancing the kingdom of God n the world. Our ministries arise from the needs of the people in Southern Africa. As services and heralds of the kingdom, we strive to respond compassionately to those needs through a prayerful discernment of our gifts and resources as a fraternity
The friars of the Province of Our Lady Queen of Peace are engaged in a wide variety of ministries: pastoral parochial ministry, formation of candidates to the Order, teaching in seminaries, animation of retreats and spiritual accompaniment, youth ministry, skills training for young people, development projects, spiritual support of those who work with people with HIV-AIDS, service as members of the hierarchy with responsibilities in the local churches (the Archbishop of Durban, the emeritus Archbishop of Pretoria and the Bishop of Port Elisabeth are all members of the Order), foreign missions. Wherever we are present, we seek to be a force for change by bringing God’s love to those we serve, healing wounds, uniting what has fallen apart and bringing home those who have lost their way.
We ask for donations to help with the formation and education of our candidates, to support the evangelising efforts of our friars, especially those who work in rural missions, for financial help to enable us to initiate new projects to serve the poor and needy and to sustain and develop our youth ministry and retreat centre “La Verna”. We need donations to help us care for the sick and aged brothers of the Province.
